As a cosmopolitan and well-educated society, Abu Dhabi is quickly developing into a thriving business centre with immense opportunities for foreign investment and continued economic growth. Abu Dhabi accounts for approximately 60 per cent of the total UAE national economy and is fast becoming one of the world's richest cities. Its GDP currently ranks amongst the highest in the world.
The emirate has massive resources of carbon fuels, which are estimated to contribute to 60 per cent of the country's GDP and make it a vital trading partner to many of the world's largest economies. Backed by the massive financial revenues produced from the oil and gas industries, Abu Dhabi has also created a number of sovereign wealth funds, such as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) - considered to be the world's largest investment fund. The financial strength derived from its natural resources and massive foreign investment has seen Abu Dhabi's status become increasingly significant on the world stage.
Seeking to ensure the continued success of the emirate's development, the Government of Abu Dhabi has set in place a framework for the diversification of its economy. In 2007, it published a long-term strategy entitled ‘Plan Abu Dhabi 2030'. The central theme of this plan is the creation of a dynamic, diverse economy, which will see the implementation of an empowered private sector; a sustainable knowledge-based economy; transparent regulatory environment; new industries; social development; and first class residential and tourist infrastructures.
In order to meet its 2030 commitments, the government has implemented a number of key initiatives that have been carefully designed to support and encourage Abu Dhabi's development as an efficient, effective and globally integrated business environment.
